You fool yourself for all sorts of reasons, but primarily for protection. You can’t survive the trauma or the failures life heaps on you without some self-delusion. Don’t apologize for it; just accept it, because once you do, you’ll find you don’t need to do it as often. You will be stronger and more resilient in the face of anxiety and trouble.
I am not saying I live in a harsh truth bubble. Sometimes we lie to ourselves without even realizing it because being honest would tear us apart. I am advocating that we try to be truthful so that we can process our pain directly and not bury it where it can fester and cause more damage.
I’ve spent too much of my life doing this and I want to save you from making the same mistake. Isn’t that what a Mom is supposed to do?
