Balance

There was mournful music

And a history of verbal abuse.

Childhood fancies

That she never knew.

Variations on a dream

Lashed out of her.

The night’s approach

A stifling blue.

The sweep of circumstance,

So often harsh,

Brought her open and joyous,

To this moment with you.
