There Must Be a Smile Waiting

Things were going better,

Or so it seemed.

More money and hopes redeemed.

But life has a way

Of showing its true face

If you dare climb up to grab a new place.

Waves return, angry and deep,

Destined to drown and destroy

The fleeting warmth of joy.

I held onto hope

As tightly as I could,

Long after people told me I should.

Embrace the ride

They all said,

But something’s not right in my head

Because I expect

More than unhappiness and dread

Before I slip off alone in my bed.
