Signposts

We walked out past the dunes
For miles til dawn.
The sign read “Devotion.”

We drove miles from anything we knew.
Strangers with unwelcome glares.
The sign read “No Vacancies.”

I slept deep and woke late.
I peeked through the crack in the curtain.
The sign read “Unworthy.”

I tripped on the stairs
And slid down, scraped up and crumpled.
The sign read “Caution.”

You called out my name
And I chose not to reply.
The sign read “Betrayal”

And that was the end of our love
Now the ache in your heart beats on
Out of rhythm, with its own sense of time
It’s what we deserve for ignoring the signs.
