Partners

Bruises that don’t heal.
Feelings you can’t describe.
The rumble of strife
That’s been with you always.
Your partner in life.

Listen and Be Open

I thought I’d learned all I needed to get through life, but what I needed to learn was that sometimes you shouldn’t think. Sometimes you just listen and open your heart to feel. That’s enlightening and it also connects you to others in a deep and lasting way.

The Admission

“He told me everything by the end of the bus ride. Maybe thirty-five minutes to admit the most intensely obscene acts I’d ever heard from another person. All to a complete stranger.”

“Sure, you read things online that curl your toes, but you can’t be sure they are true. The look in his eyes verified his words. He wouldn’t look away. He wanted to confirm that I understood and that I was his witness, of sorts, after so many years of holding it inside.”

Rip it Off

“Do it quickly,” she said. “It’s better for both of you to make a clean, fast break.” That break ended up being my index finger. Granted, I was pointing it at him when we broke up, but I don’t think I deserved that. I just wanted to be free of the mind games and the stalking. Nobody wants that.

The Rush

“I’ve let so much slip away that it’s become an avalanche. Life speeding up and off into the distance in a suffocating rush of fears and anxieties that are mashed together with the tiny amount of hope I used to have.”

“When I look ahead now, it’s a shadowy horizon-out of focus-yet still clearly a line I may never cross. Because going there means I have to face the rubble, the remnants of my existence and find a way to make something new.”

A Piece for Everyone

“I only want what anyone wants. Decent pay. A decent guy and some peace of mind when my head hits the pillow. I am zero for three and there’s my sister to look after as well.”

“I feel as though I’m due a break. I’m not hoping for all of it. Just a piece of the dream.”

Locked Out

“He said let’s keep things as they are. I said I was disinterested and wanted something new.”

“That’s when he walked me to the door and shoved me out. He bolted it tight and and ignored my screams. The neighbors ignored them too because they were used to tuning out noise. Used to staying out of it. Now, just look at me. Nothing but this outfit and my phone.”
