Partners

Bruises that don’t heal.
Feelings you can’t describe.
The rumble of strife
That’s been with you always.
Your partner in life.

Listen and Be Open

I thought I’d learned all I needed to get through life, but what I needed to learn was that sometimes you shouldn’t think. Sometimes you just listen and open your heart to feel. That’s enlightening and it also connects you to others in a deep and lasting way.

The Admission

“He told me everything by the end of the bus ride. Maybe thirty-five minutes to admit the most intensely obscene acts I’d ever heard from another person. All to a complete stranger.”

“Sure, you read things online that curl your toes, but you can’t be sure they are true. The look in his eyes verified his words. He wouldn’t look away. He wanted to confirm that I understood and that I was his witness, of sorts, after so many years of holding it inside.”

A Piece for Everyone

“I only want what anyone wants. Decent pay. A decent guy and some peace of mind when my head hits the pillow. I am zero for three and there’s my sister to look after as well.”

“I feel as though I’m due a break. I’m not hoping for all of it. Just a piece of the dream.”

Locked Out

“He said let’s keep things as they are. I said I was disinterested and wanted something new.”

“That’s when he walked me to the door and shoved me out. He bolted it tight and and ignored my screams. The neighbors ignored them too because they were used to tuning out noise. Used to staying out of it. Now, just look at me. Nothing but this outfit and my phone.”

The Shovel

“I have the shovel. I use it to clear away the ungodly amount of bullshit I have to deal with every day. Coworkers, partner, kids. You name it.”

“Why must it fill back up overnight, like it is working overtime while I’m asleep just so I’ll have more of the same old shit waiting for me? Groundhog Day, only shittier.”

Altercations

“I stood up as much as I could. He’s bigger than me. Stronger than me. Plus, he fights dirty, like life or death dirty, so I don’t see why you are so upset. I deserve credit here, not this silent treatment. Say something.”
